The booklet titled, ‘Santos au Arrauceiros” in Portuguese was written by Freedom Fighter late Sri
Evagrio Jorge of Carmona-Goa, and published in 1944 by Gomantak Praja Mandal Bombay ( now
Mumbai). The account depicted the bestial events of “Inquisition” of 16th Century Goa.
The book was translated in English after his death by Thomas Dias who was also a freedom
fighter.
The book narrates the history of the Inquisition in Goa in its essential details. Even so, this most
painful story is narrated plainly with no embellishment or exaggeration. It quotes extensively
from the archives of the Portuguese administration, letters & books from eminent Europeans and
Indian authors including literary luminaries such as Dr. Juliao Menezes, Dr. T. B. Cunha, Cunha
Riveira, Dr. M. Braganza and eye witness reports of Catholic priests.
The translation refers to similar citations from “Inquisition of Goa” by the late historian A. K.
Priolkar , 1961), “Goa’s Freedom Struggle-a History” by Prof. M. H. Sardesai (A Goa Govt’s
publication-vol I), Dr. Tela Mascarenhas’ “When the mango-trees blossom 1976”, “Goa Awaking”
by Evagrio Jorge and “Oriente Conquistado” by Fr. Francis de Souza etc.
